I started this tour at the road to Ölkelduháls. It takes you up to to the top of said Ölkelduháls and down past Kattatjarnir to lake Þingvallavatn. From there you go to the powerplant (Nesjavallavirkjun) and take the old road up to the top. Follow the asphalt road to the top and to the west slope and then along a very cool singletrack back towards the powerplant (Hellisheiðavirkjun) on the south of Hengill. Its a very difficult route with big climbs and quite rough sections which are demanding to cycle. There is however no better scenic route and the view is amazing. Remember to take a spare tube and the basic tools.
