The gates to the entrance of Doongalla from Simpsons Rd are currently closed due to wet weather. Park 3 mins back down the road in the carpark at The Basin Theatre ( on weekends. Not sure if you are allowed on weekdays).
Walk around entrance gates and continue straight ahead on Edgar Track. This quickly becomes Doongalla Forest Rd. With the road being closed, you can safely walk along this gravel roadway. Very soon, the landscape changes into one of the prettiest places you'll ever walk! Tree ferns, crossing the Dandenong Creek, towering gums. Keep walking up this gentle incline until you reach the Doongalla Picnic Ground. Enter here and find the sign to Stables Track. It's over to the right of the signpost. Take Stables Track until it intersects with Bills Track - turn left here. Continue along Bills Track until it meets Edgar Track. Turn left and continue along Edgar Track until it meets Golf Course Track. Turn left and stay on Golf Course Track until you're back on Doongalla Forest Rd. Turn right and head back to your starting point.
There's been some decent rain this week so parts of the off-road tracks can be muddy and slippery, but on the whole it's quite an easy hike.
I chose this mainly because my dodgy knee is playing up and I didn't want any steep downhills. This circuit does have some small inclines but nothing difficult.
You may come across some horse riders as there are stables nearby.

Great trail, thanks Andrea. We walked it last night, your directions were very easy to follow. There were a few more hills than expected but nothing too strenuous. I was out night walking and your directions were very clear to follow though I do think the trail signs may have changed direction with the high winds, thankfully the wikiloc app was helpful in navigating around those issues

Great trail, thanks Andrea. We walked it last night, your directions were very easy to follow. There were a few more hills than expected but nothing too strenuous.
