Itinerary description
One of our favorite trails because it's so difficult to follow. There are 4 canoe trails in the NWR, and this is not one of them. There are no trail marker posts, and some of the areas are so complex that even zoom-in on GPS won't help because GPS is accurate to only within 10 to 15 ft. The trail can only be made in the rainy season, and on parts of the trail, we were scraping bottom, but it's passable.
The launch is south from the Marsh Trail Parking Lot, about a quarter-mile toward the observation tower. You'll have to portage across Oil Pad Trail just before (north of) the tower before proceeding south along the east side of the trail. We marked the trail with a pink surveyor's flagging, but if you go 20 minutes without seeing a flag, you may be lost... We posted some maps in Dropbox under the "View More" tab and suggested you bring them along (or not).
It's a great paddle. You'll enjoy it.
