Itinerary description
This is a very beautiful and slightly demanding trek that will bring you to the highest peak of Crete.
Set in your gps Refuge Lakos Migeron, where you can easily park your car and start the route few meters after.
The route is very well marked so you don’t need any map and probably not even this track. There are everywhere red spots or yellow arrows to point you in the right direction. Only once it happened to me to follow a wrong path but I soon realised I could no longer see red spots so I just came back until I saw them.
The route is a continuous ascent but the view on top is paramount!
Obviously this is a hike for people who hike regularly and who can cope with such an elevation gain and also with the way down that can be at times difficult if you are not technically experienced on these types of paths.
Now, the car route to the beginning of trek is very hilly, with rocks and often holes in it, especially in its last 10 km. You proceed covering 2 km per minute. So ensure you get back while there is still light, if you want to drive comfortable. I would also discourage you from trying other routes while driving as you may end up in really messy roads, unless you have a SUV…
