Itinerary description

(En español abajo) This is not the GR10, but a shortcut from St Etienne de Baígorry to Bidarray, avoiding the GR10 along Iparla ridge, because we were short of time. The first part was along the main road D948 until the hamlet of Artasarhi where St Etienne´s rubbish recycling centre is located. This part was not much fun, as we followed this busy road. However after leaving the D948 by crossing a cattle grid on the left just past there (after the Urdos stream) it was much nicer, and we foollowed an easy route along dirt tracks to Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa, where we stopped for lunch (at the Fronton pitch - it seems there are no shops or bars here). We then left the village and found a well marked footpath up the hill. This was great, except at one point we did have to find our way through high ferns. Nevertheless that was only a short stretch and we soon got to the Larla mine. From this point the trail was relatively easy, following signs and tracks down to Bidarray.
Evitamos la GR10 por falta de tiempo y hicimos un atajo partiendo de St Etienne por la carretera D948 hasta Artasarhi donde está el Punto Limpio de St Etienne. Este trozo es feo porque ibamos por la carretera. Justo después de pasar el riochuelo de Urdos (Ruisseau d'Urdos) salimos de la carretera principal cruzando un paso canadiense, y a partir de este punto el trayecto fue más agradable, aunque fur por pistas. paramos en Saint-Martin-d'Arrossa para comer (en un banco al lado de la pista de frontón - parece que no hay tiendas o bares). Un rato a la salida encontramos un senero señalizado y muy agradable sino que en algún punto tuvimos que buscar el camino por los helechos. Salimos de ese parte difícil (solo fur unos 600m) y llegamos a otro sendero bastante obvio dónde está la mina de Larla. Desde allí la bajada hasta Bidarray fue fácil.

Cattle grid and road

Leave the highway D948 to the left and cross the cattle grid onto a small country lane parrallel to the main road. Salir de la carretera D948 aquí cruzando el paso canadiense a la izquierda, y seguir la pista delante (a la derecha) que va paralelo a la carretera.

Jarlekia trail begins

We left the tarmac following a signposted trail to Jarlekia and Haritzondo. initially this trail was very clearly marked. Salimos de la carretera dónde había carteles marcando un sendero a Jarlekia y Haritzondo. Al princípio este sendero fue fácil seguir.

Pass a house and turn left onto a tarmac road and head a few metres downhill. Soon afterwards looking for a footpath to the left. Take the footpath, so now as you start to descend the house you passed is again on your left. Soon afterwards look for a footpath to the left. Take this footpath signposted Sentier des Contrabandiers towards Bidarray, so now as you start to descend the house you passed is again on your left. En unos metros se encuentra otro sendero bajando a la izquierda (señalizado Sentier des Contrabandiers) hacia Bidarray. La misma casa que habrá pasado ahara estará en la mano izquierda.
