Itinerary description
Recommended map setting Openstreetmap or Opencyclemap. It is recommended to follow this route using GPS. This is version 2 and contains more detail than version 1
The starting point is near Hemel Hempstead Station but on the south side of the railway at the edge of Roughdown Common. If there is a way to cross the railway at the station without the need for a ticket then that would be the best route. Alternatively, go via Roughdown Road.
From Roughdown Common, take the Chiltern Way towards Bovingdon. There is a short section of Chiltern Way about 100 metres along a road with no footway, care is required here.
At Sheethanger Common, turn off the Chiltern Way onto the Hertfordshire Way which runs parallel and gives and leads to St Lawrence Church at Bovingdon. Take the public footpath through the church yard.
At the cross roads in Bovingdon, turn left then after 300 m, turn right along residential road Austins Mead. Chiltern Way footpath continues between two houses.
Footpath leads to Holly Hedges Lane then leave the Chiltern Way and take Hertfordshire Way to Chipperfield Common where there are pubs and a cafe/bar.
Return to Hemel Hempstead via footpath to Ruckler's Lane then byway back to Hemep Hempstead.
